Dear Representative Carbajal, I want to know where you stand on the issue of institutional investors and their impact on housing affordability in our district. It's clear that the concentration of ownership by these entities leads to outcomes that aren't in line with the needs of residents in Santa Barbara. We need policies that ensure beneficial-ownership disclosure, scrutinize bulk purchases of starter homes, and protect us against abusive fees and evictions. As a resident and taxpayer in Santa Barbara, I’m increasingly concerned about how these trends are affecting our community. The rising costs and limited availability of homes for families and first-time buyers are pushing many out of the market. The incentives for institutional investors differ significantly from those of owner-occupants, which means our interests as local residents are often sidelined. It feels like we’re fighting an uphill battle, and without action, more families will struggle to find affordable housing. I ask you to take a strong position on this issue and advocate for reforms that align the incentives of institutional investors with the needs of your constituents. Supporting measures that promote transparency and fairness in housing transactions will make a tangible difference in ensuring that Santa Barbara remains a place where families can thrive.
