Dear Councilmember Friedman,
The Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) has announced a 3.6% reduction in bus services effective August 17, 2026, as a response to a $5.8 million budget shortfall. This reduction is primarily due to a 30% decrease in federal operating funds resulting from adjustments in the 2020 Census. These cuts will lead to increased wait times on Lines 1 and 2, reduced Saturday services on several routes, and the elimination of specific trips deemed lower-performing. This situation is concerning for those who rely on public transit for daily commutes, as it will directly affect their mobility and access to essential services.
As a resident of Santa Barbara who pays taxes here, I find the impact of these service reductions alarming. Many in our community depend on these bus routes for work, education, and other vital activities. The reduction in services could disproportionately affect those who are already facing economic challenges, making it even more difficult for them to get around. Public transit is a critical lifeline for many residents, and these cuts risk leaving vulnerable populations without reliable options.
What is your stance on MTD's decision to reduce bus services, and what steps do you intend to take to address the budget shortfall and its impact on our community?
Sincerely,
Eric Rosenfeld
