Dear Mayor Rowse,
As of May 20, 2026, the California FAIR Plan announced a 29.1% average rate increase for certain homeowners, effective October 15, 2026. This significant hike will particularly affect those of us in high-risk, fire-prone areas like Santa Barbara County. Additionally, the maximum residential dwelling coverage has been raised to $3 million per structure, up from the previous $1.5 million. Homeowners will need to review their current insurance policies and consider mitigation efforts to potentially reduce premiums, but many of us may struggle to keep up with these sudden changes, especially those already feeling the financial strains of living in a high-risk area.
With these upcoming increases, I’m concerned about the impact on local families and the overall community. Many homeowners could face severe financial challenges if they can't adapt quickly to these new rates or secure adequate coverage. The stakes are high, and I want to know how you are planning to address these challenges in our community. What measures can we expect from your office to help mitigate these impacts on homeowners in Santa Barbara County?
Please state your public position on this specific matter and what you intend to do about it.
Sincerely,
Eric Rosenfeld
